The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has made its
2023 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) Loan Application Register (LAR) data
accessible online with loan-level information filed by financial institutions
and modified to protect consumer privacy.
Interested parties may access the data via the Federal
Financial Institutions Examination Council’s (FFIEC) HMDA platform, which contains LAR data for
more than 5,000 financial institutions, according to the bureau. Users may
download institution-specific modified LAR files or a combined file with data
from all institutions.
Previously, LAR data could only be obtained by requesting it
directly from individual institutions. The CFPB's 2015 HMDA rule authorized
electronic access to each filer’s data on the FFIEC’s platform.
Additional forms of 2023 HMDA data will be available later
this year to provide users data insights. These will include nationwide
loan-level datasets with publicly available data for all HMDA reporters, as
well as aggregate and disclosure reports with summary information by geography
and lender. Users also will gain access to the 2023 data through the HMDA Data
Browser, where they will be able to create custom datasets, reports and data
maps. The CFPB also plans to publish a data point article, highlighting key
trends in the annual data.
The CFPB offers A
Beginner’s Guide to Accessing and Using HMDA Data, which includes
background information and technical tips.
