Mortgage originations fell by a third in 2014, but don’t blame the regulatory climate

Mortgage originations dropped by nearly a third, as low mortgage interest rates caused refinances to drop off by more than half last year compared with 2013, according to the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council’s 2014 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data. Some of the trends reflected in the 2014 HMDA data may be the product of regulatory changes that took effect last year.
