The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says someone is sending companies phony emails in the agency's name. According to a bureau blog post, the emails contain the subject line “consumer complaint regarding your company,” and they direct recipients to respond to the purported complaints filed against them.
“The CFPB did not send or direct anyone to send these emails,” wrote CFPB Chief Information Officer Chris Willey. “These emails may be malicious.”
Companies that receive such an email should not open it or click on any links within it. Companies should not provide any personal, consumer or commercial information in response to the emails.
“The CFPB continues to investigate this incident and will respond accordingly,” Willey wrote.
