On Nov. 23, 2022, HomeTrust Mortgage reported a data breach with the Attorney General of Montana after hackers successfully carried out a ransomware attack against the company. According to HomeTrust, the breach resulted in the names, addresses and Social Security numbers of certain customers being compromised.
The filing with the Montana Attorney General stated that, on July 15, 2022, HomeTrust was made aware of suspicious activity within its computer system. In response, the company began working with third-party data security experts to better understand the incident and to determine if any customer information had been compromised as a result of the breach.
HomeTrust’s investigation confirmed that the company was the victim of a ransomware attack and that an unauthorized party had gained access to its network. The investigation also revealed that the unauthorized party removed some of the files from the company’s network and that these files contained sensitive consumer information.
Affected customers, reported to be over 12,000, have been notified of the breach. It is unknown whether these customers will pursue legal action against HomeTrust for a claim of negligence.
