The Mortgage Bankers Association presented its new board of directors and announced a host of awards and designations at its annual convention in Washington D.C.
The board will be chaired by CMG Financial President and CEO Chris George and brings six new members to the 38-person board.
“MBA’s is the most effective and influential voice in the real estate finance industry,” George said in a press release. “Serving alongside these board members, we will ensure that the key legislative and regulatory issues impacting the industry remain the first priority for our association.”

Diversity and Inclusion Leadership
MBA announced that four companies have been recognized as a 2018 Residential Diversity and Inclusion Leadership award recipient. The annual awards recognize MBA members for their leadership efforts in diversity and inclusion in two award categories: organizational diversity and market outreach strategies.
The Organizational Diversity and Inclusion award celebrates company initiatives that were specifically developed and designed to increase diversity and inclusion within the leadership and employee base of member companies, thereby leading to a mortgage banking industry that may better reflect and understand its customers.
The Market Outreach Strategies award recognizes company initiatives that are specifically developed and designed to increase outreach, marketing and products to attract customers from the industry's fastest growing market segments.
The four 2018 Residential Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award Winners are:
Organizational Diversity and Inclusion award: Genworth Mortgage Insurance (companies less than 1,000 employees) and Veterans United Home Loans (companies more than 1,000 employees)
Market Outreach Strategies award: Alterra Home Loans (companies less than 1,000 employees) and First Citizens Bank (companies more than 1,000 employees)

Lifetime Achievement Award
Certified Mortgage Bankers Society presented Peter J. Taglia of Financial Capital Assets Corp., a subsidiary of First Tennessee Bank, with its E. Michael Rosser MBA Education Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Pete’s years of dedication and educational leadership in real estate finance have benefited an endless number of mortgage professionals,” Society Chairwoman Rachel Dollar said in a release. “We confer this award in recognition of his contribution to the success of our industry’s talented and diverse workforce.”
Open Doors annual awards
MBA announced the recipients of the MBA Opens Doors Foundation annual awards, which recognize those who have made lasting contributions to advance the Foundation’s mission of providing mortgage and rental assistance grants to parents and guardians caring for a critically ill or injured child.
The 2018 Opens Doors Foundation award winners are:
- Community Champion Award: Susan and Van Stewart, CEO and president, respectively, of SWBC Mortgage.
- Founder’s Award: David and Mary Stevens, who along with Dan Arrigoni, founded the MBA Opens Doors Foundation.
- Spirit Award: Sharyn Torrisi-Cartwright, VP of human resources, Pulte Mortgage; Cheryl Paul, SVP, director of mortgage at Settlers Bank; and Susan Brown, SVP, construction and renovation production manager, Umpqua Bank.
Distinguished Service Award
MBA honored Rich Bennion, executive vice president of HomeStreet, Inc., and HomeStreet Bank with its Andrew D. Woodward Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented in recognition of dedication and prominent service to MBA and the mortgage lending industry in a variety of capacities involving both legislative and regulatory activities.
Schumacher-Bolduc Award
Mortgage Bankers Association Political Action Committee awarded Edgar Bright, president of Standard Mortgage Corp., with the 2018 Schumacher-Bolduc Award. The award was given in recognition of his outstanding work on behalf of MBA’s political advocacy programs and the mortgage lending industry.
