The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has appointed Lorelei Salas as the assistant director of the Office of Supervision Policy and Eric Halperin as assistant director for the Office of Enforcement.
Most recently, Salas worked as commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, and Halperin was the CEO of Civil Rights Corps.
“Lorelei Salas and Eric Halperin are both distinguished public servants with deep expertise in consumer protection,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said. “Together, they will be effective watchdogs over the financial marketplace, especially when it comes to stopping repeat offenders.”
While serving as commissioner, Salas oversaw hundreds of inspectors, attorneys, and other professionals. The agency aggressively pursued corporations that employed unlawful and predatory practices to target low-income and immigrant consumers. Salas also has been the legal director at Make the Road New York, led the legal department at Catholic Migration Services, worked in the New York State Attorney General’s Office in the litigation and labor bureaus, and held several senior management positions at the New York State Department of Labor.
Salas was awarded the Open Society Foundations’ Leadership in Government fellowship, served as a Fulbright specialist with expertise in U.S consumer and worker protection laws, and was nominated by President Barack Obama as the wage and hour administrator at the U.S. Department of Labor.
In addition to being CEO of Civil Right Corps., Halperin also has served in leadership roles within the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, as a senior advisor to Open Society Foundations’ U.S. Program, and as the director of the Center for Responsible Lending’s litigation program and Washington office. While working for the justice department, Halperin received the attorney general’s John Marshall Award and distinguished service award.
